9 barrels survived the worst flood disaster in the Ahr valley - a glimmer of hope and an extraordinary project at the same time.
Lost barrels - all started with a single drop
A tiny harbinger of one of the worst flood disasters that the idyllic Ahr valley in Germany had ever experienced. In the midst of this natural disaster, which turned the village of Dernau into a sad ruin, Meike and Dörte Näkel, the proud owners of a renowned German winery, were also hit hard. The flood raged through the 25 kilometers of vineyards, sweeping everything away, including the entire Meyer-Näkel 2020 vintage.
After the flood, nine intact barrels were found in the following days in villages several kilometers away. These “lost barrels” turned out to be nine of the 380 barrels of Pinot Noir originally produced for the 2020 vintage. A decision was made to bottle this wonderful wine for later presentation to wine lovers around the world as part of a larger campaign. Renowned chefs and Michelin-starred restaurants were involved in a global wine tasting tour.
The project
The label design by the agency Ruska Martin Associates developed into a unique project. The strategy was not just to design a simple wine label, but rather to create a work of art. This work of art is intended to arouse the desire of wine connoisseurs and collectors worldwide.
The technical execution
Nine different labels: each shows a growing drop, from one to nine.
